KEYNOTE
“Queering Pedagogy and Knowledge Production in the Classroom – Creating Praxis-Oriented Courses”
Dr. Loran Marsan
Queer pedagogy is a new and expanding field that comes out of social justice-oriented and feminist pedagogical practices. Queer theory has its roots in postmodernism, poststructuralism, feminism, and interdisciplinary fields of study. Often, incorporating a theoretical framework that refuses normalcy and capital T Truth while problematizing the very existence of concrete knowledge can, at the very least, be hard to do. This keynote will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of experimenting with pedagogical tactics, the risks a teacher takes when the idea of knowledge itself is challenged, and how to create a classroom/course based on philosophical ideals that is also still practical, relatable, and usable in the “real” world. Media and communication become crucial in this pedagogical setup as knowledge becomes no longer something gained but something produced and this production can then be claimed actively by students and communities.
